The Baldwin Outdoors Committee

 

The Baldwin Outdoors Committee consists of parents and caregivers who are committed to enhancing the outdoor recess area at Baldwin Middle School. We hope to address our children’s social and emotional needs by creating a fun, creative, and inclusive space for learning and play during school hours, outdoor class time, club meetings, and after school time. Our projects are guided by student input and an ongoing partnership with the faculty, administration and Baldwin PTO. Every new project must be approved by our Principal, Assistant Principal, and Guilford’s Director of Operations and Facilities. We currently rely on community donations, volunteers, grants and fundraising efforts to help us achieve our goals.

 

In Fall 2020, we created an Amazon Wishlist that includes both indoor and outdoor recess items approved by Principal Doug Hammel and Assistant Principal Phillip Ross. The list includes items for both indoor and outdoor recess, and is updated each year to reflect requests from students and recess aides. We are very appreciative of any donation and are grateful for your support!

2024-2025

The Baldwin Outdoors Committee is thrilled to announce the addition of a natural outdoor learning environment to the list of recess options at Baldwin! This area provides multiple destinations that include seating, climbing and gathering areas, along with an outdoor classroom space open to teachers at any time throughout the school day.

 

  

  

 

A huge THANK YOU to the Baldwin PTO for their generous donations which made this project possible. In addition, a heartfelt thank you to Principal Doug Hammel and Assistant Principal Phillip Ross for their continued support, to fellow Guilford parent and landscape architect Crystal Gaudio of Rubus Landscape Architecture for her time and design insight, to A&W Sanitation for their help with installation and to Peter Marlowe Forest Projects for all of the natural materials.

 

The outdoor space at Baldwin is an ongoing project and lends itself to an abundance of possibility. We are thrilled to be able to kick-off our plans with the addition of this wonderful, natural space. We look forward to the fun it will bring to students at Baldwin and to children throughout the Guilford community. Enjoy!

 

 

2021-2022

 

The BMS PTO Executive Board called a motion to request approval for the purchase of a Gaga Pit at our March 2022 meeting and IT PASSED!!  The goal is to have the Gaga Pit setup in 6 weeks (with the hopes of just a couple weeks).

GFFE - Game Top Picnic Tables
We are very excited to share that Baldwin Middle School has been approved for an Evolving Education Grant from the Guilford Fund for Education! This incredibly generous grant will allow the PTO to purchase two, ADA compliant, outdoor picnic tables on which the Baldwin Outdoors Committee will paint Chess/Checkers game boards. These tables will be used for recess, outdoor class time, and will serve as a future space for club meetings and enrichment activities. We are thrilled to be able to add these tables to the outdoor space at Baldwin. On behalf of the students, faculty, PTO and the Baldwin Outdoors Committee - thank you, GFFE!! Blacktop Project
Thanks to a very generous donation from our PTO this year, Baldwin Outdoors has been able to purchase hula hoops, jump ropes, corn hole, board games, chalk, stacking cup games, portable bases, and more! 

With our remaining funds and an extremely generous donation of time and work from Tom Hinding and The Hinding Group, we painted games on the blacktop, including foursquare and basketball court lines. Stay tuned for updates and photos. 

 

 

Upcoming Projects
We look forward to reaching out to the students again for ideas and revisiting these projects each school year. Some items students have requested include:

 

  • Elevated garden bed
  • Swings
  • Climbing structure
  • Nature observation deck
